Founder’s and Directors Statement 2026:

·       Banter and Brews Men’s Group CIC was founded by Stephen Hall, whose own lived experience shaped the vision and purpose of the group:

After leaving his role as an HGV driver due to ill health, Stephen’s mental health declined significantly. Following a long period of isolation and counselling, he began volunteering at Reddish Foodbank with Re:dish Charity, where he gave eight years of service. During that time, he became a Team Leader, helped establish the Re:dish Community Allotment, supported a range of community projects, and served as a Trustee during a period of major growth, including the transfer of the Re:dish Hub from SMBC.

Stephen also volunteered for five years with Solidarity, supporting people with PIP and ESA applications. Despite these positive contributions, his mental health later deteriorated again, and he stepped back from many of his commitments to focus on recovery. After a two-year break, he felt ready to volunteer again but struggled to find a group that met his needs or reflected his experiences. This led him to create a supportive space for men facing similar challenges. Banter and Brews was formed in 2022, with the group officially coming together in March of that year.

The group initially operated under the umbrella of Re:dish, and the partnership proved highly successful. As Banter and Brews began attracting funding opportunities intended specifically for the group, it became clear that a more independent structure was needed. To ensure transparency, accountability, and proper management of funds, Stephen decided that Banter and Brews should become a constituted group.

Today, Stephen and Banter and Brews Men’s Group CIC is proud to say we’re now a Community Interest Company.  We can offer so much more as a CIC.  We still provide a safe, welcoming, and informal space where men can connect, talk openly, and support one another. It is built on understanding, shared experience, and the belief that no one should face mental health challenges alone. I would like to thank all the volunteers and members for their support in helping to make B & B’s CIC into what it is today. I would also like to thank the many support workers from agencies across Stockport who have helped the group grow and progress.
